The majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this belief are diverse. Certain scientists are studying evolution to make practical discoveries such as developing new drugs or enhancing existing ones. Others do this to improve the quality of animal and plant species, mostly to benefit of humans. Some are simply curious, while still others have a deep religious belief in God and are seeking to know how the universe functions.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken seriously. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists typically fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The most common kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation is literal and that the universe and life on Earth were only created recently.

OECs are less well known, but they are just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old and they believe that evolution is an untruth.

Both kinds of creationism deny that scientific principles such as biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life started on Earth. They argue that evolution isn't possible because it requires the creation of a miracle, and the founders of modern science eschewed miracles for fear that they would lose credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their position "theistic evolution." This is sometimes known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." In this theory, God creates the original species and allows them to change over time. In the end these evolutionary changes will create new species that are identical to the original species.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event known as the Great Flood. They believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and then gradually evolved. They reject the concept of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life can't come from nonliving matter.

In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional associations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, some academic institutions and scientists are more flexible, and allow the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism, many of them think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their books. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. STR has secured its first victory in eliminating examples of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. It is now focusing on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution too.

STR claims that it has the backing of 4,000 families and members. Its goal is to weed out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in evolution. The causes aren't clear, but may include religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has achieved a number of things through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a cosmological perspective. This led to an interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

On August 6-7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on creation science in major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
